POPULAR WEDDING HYMNS - THE GUIDE

A useful guide to choosing your wedding hymns. Details of popular wedding hymns, suitable hymns for weddings and uplifting wedding hymns.

Choosing the music for your first dance, for the reception, or the songs for the DJ to play might be difficult enough to choose – however choosing the hymns for your wedding ceremony might be even more stressful.

Why is the process of choosing the wedding hymns for your church wedding so difficult? For most of your guests at the ceremony, their experience of church hymns is singing them in assembly at school, being taken to church as a young child, of other people’s wedding hymns and funerals – or even from national or sporting events.

Most people – whether a regular churchgoer or not – will probably know or recognise the tune of some of the famous church wedding hymns. But, it is likely that you might have no idea of the name of the hymn…and the thought of meeting the vicar or organist and humming bits of music to them can seem quite embarrassing!

Read on to find a list I have put together of some of the most popular wedding hymns, wedding songs, anthems and solos heard at church weddings across the UK. The list is by no means complete, as there are hundreds of hymns, most of them known to just organists and choirmasters. But it just lists the names of the hymns that the couples we work with most frequently request for their church weddings.

There are a variety of recordings and videos of popular church wedding hymns from different musicians, but from a professional violinist and pianist these will sound even more romantic. These wedding hymn recordings are to help you remember which wedding hymns you like. Put together a list of a few hymns, then search for them online to find the words of the hymns and whether they fit what you are trying to express as a couple.

Some hymns have grown in popularity over the years – and some even have two or three different tunes available. Make sure you specify which one you like, so there are no nasty surprises on the day.

At a church wedding, you will usually need to choose between 2-3 wedding hymns.
